The Alcázar books out months ahead. Casa de Pilatos and Palacio de las Dueñas don't. Both are aristocratic palaces of comparable architectural ambition, both are still in private hands, and both receive a fraction of the tourist traffic of the royal monument down the road. This tour takes you inside both in two hours.
Palacio de las Dueñas is the Seville home of the House of Alba — one of the oldest noble houses in Spain, with more official titles than any other family in the world. The palace was built in the 15th century and was visited by everyone from Jacquie Kennedy to Grace Kelly. It has Gothic-Mudéjar and Renaissance architecture, wooden ceilings, marble colonnades, and gardens containing over 1,400 artworks. The poet Antonio Machado was born here.

Built in the 15th century as the Seville residence of the House of Alba. The Gothic-Mudéjar arcade in the main courtyard was completed in the same decade as Casa de Pilatos, by craftsmen working in a parallel tradition. The gardens have 1,400 artworks — contemporary sculpture alongside 15th-century pieces — spread across formal parterres and orange-tree courtyards. Antonio Machado, Spain's most celebrated 20th-century poet, was born in one of the service buildings here in 1875.
The tour continues on foot to Casa de Pilatos, seven minutes away. The guide uses the Medinaceli palace as a counterpoint to Dueñas — showing how two aristocratic families in the same city, at the same historical moment, built palaces that look related but tell different stories about their owners' priorities. The Roman sculpture collection at Pilatos has no equivalent at Dueñas. The tilework at Pilatos is more elaborate. The gardens at Dueñas are larger.
